Freedom Honor Flight and UW–La Crosse Athletics to resume event in 2021

The annual Veterans Day Breakfast held by Freedom Honor Flight and UW–La Crosse Athletics has been cancelled due to the current COVID-19 pandemic. This was to have been the 10th year for the event.

“We are disappointed that the breakfast can’t proceed as usual,” said Ryan Clark, president of Freedom Honor Flight. “But due to the current situation, our priority has to be the health and safety of the veterans we serve. Together with UW-La Crosse Athletics staff and students, we look forward to resuming this event on Veterans Day in 2021.” The breakfast was to have been held Wednesday, Nov. 11.

The honor flights scheduled for May and September of this year have been postponed. Veterans who were scheduled to take those flights will be rescheduled when flights can be safely resumed.

Veterans Day Breakfast cancelled for 2020

The annual icon sale for Freedom Honor Flight kicks off July 3 at four Festival Foods locations. The icons, which can be purchased for either $1 or $5, help raise funds to take area veterans to see the memorials in their honor in Washington DC. The start of the sale coincides with Independence Day to emphasize the importance of veterans in safeguarding our freedoms. Icons will be available through July 17.

Eligible veterans take the flight free of charge, thanks to generous donors and fundraisers such as the icon sale. Get your icon today to support Freedom Honor Flight!

The Freedom Honor Flight scheduled for September 12, 2020, has been postponed.

The national honor flight organization has extended the suspension of all Honor Flight travel through the remainder of 2020.

Freedom Honor Flight President Dave Larsen said, “The safety of our veterans is our top priority. Our veterans are older adults and many have severe underlying chronic medical conditions. They are at a higher risk for developing more serious complications from COVID-19 illness.”

The organization is committed to rescheduling what will be the 25th flight as soon as possible. Fundraising continues. One of the largest fundraisers for the group, the Festival Foods Icon Sale will be held as planned, July 3–17 at the Holmen, La Crosse and Onalaska Festival Food stores.

2020 Freedom Honor Flight scheduled for September postponed

March 12, 2020, La Crosse, Wis. – Organizers from Freedom Honor Flight, the La Crosse-based hub of the national Honor Flight Network, have announced they are postponing the May 9, 2020 flight to Washington D.C. What was to have been the group’s 25th honor flight is being postponed due to the increased risk of air travel and large group gatherings associated with COVID-19.

At an emergency meeting this week, the board of directors reviewed a report prepared by Kevin Kuchar, paramedic and longtime Freedom Honor Flight board member. Based on the recommendations by Kuchar and concurrence from fellow board member, John Pershing, MD, emergency medicine physician with Gundersen Health System, the board voted to postpone the flight.

Most veterans on the flights are older adults and many have severe underlying medical conditions. According to the CDC, those individuals seem to be at higher risk for developing more serious complications from COVID-19 illness. The safety and comfort of veterans is top priority for Freedom Honor Flight. Veterans who would have been selected for the May 9 flight will be rescheduled for the next flight.
